About Maria Carrasco, Candidate for Frederick County Board of Education

I am a public health practitioner, researcher, and educator with more than 20 years of experience leading complex public health initiatives across government, academia, and the nonprofit sector. I hold a BA in Economics (Truman State), an MPP (Duke), and an MPH and PhD (Johns Hopkins).

Currently, I lead a consulting practice and also teach a graduate course at Johns Hopkins where for the past eight years I’ve helped students connect evidence to the decisions leaders face every day. I am also helping build a small organic farm business here in Frederick County, growing something from the ground up with care, patience, and responsibility.

I am a longtime Frederick County resident and parent. I volunteer at my daughter’s elementary school and at my church. I serve on the Board of Education Citizens Advisory Council. I also serve as an academic editor for a scientific journal, which keeps me grounded in rigorous evidence and up to date on new research.

My family and I spend our weekends in Frederick County’s parks, trails, libraries and our farm. We stay connected to our community through church, Girl Scouts, choir, softball, and baseball.

A happy family outdoors on a sunny day, with a woman with dark hair, a man with a beard, and a young girl with curly hair playing on the man's shoulders near pink flowers and greenery.

Why I am running for BOE

Family celebrating Christmas indoors, with a woman, a boy, a girl, and a man. The woman holds a large stuffed animal, and the children wear festive clothing. The scene has holiday decorations and a cozy atmosphere.

I’ve spent my career in public service solving complex problems and delivering results. When the opportunity to serve in the BOE opened last year I applied because I care deeply about our schools and our community. Although I wasn’t selected, this experience strengthened my commitment to serve.

I’m running because I want to bring my skills home to Frederick County to strengthen student outcomes, support educators, and ensure every school delivers for every family.
